A demineralizer is a system, which uses ion exchange chemical process to remove dissolved ionic compounds (salts) from water. It is also known as Deionized Water System, Demineralizer or DM Plant.
Demineralized Water is also popular as Deionized Water that comes out after ions removal. Here ions mean cations such as calcium, iron, copper, sodium and anions like chloride, nitrate sulphate which are mingled with the water. Deionization is the physical process used for replacement of the mineral salts in the water in the form of H+ and H – ions. Generally, water impurities are in the water in the form of dissolved salts and deionization makes the water high quality like distilled water after removing. DM water plant builds mineral free water changing ion, degasification and even polishing. The Demineralized water process is used widely in the field of steam and cooling.
Mostly used Deionization Process:
The two-bed deionization : The two bed deionization is constructed with two vessels in which one contain is used as a cation-exchange resin in the form of (H+) and the other vessel is used as an anion resin in the form of (OH-). Water runs through the cation vessel. To keep water balanced electrically, for every step, one hydrogen ion and two hydrogen ion are exchanged according to need. The same principle is applied at the time of anion-exchange.
Mixed- bed Deionization – In case of Mixed-bed deionization, the cation and anion exchange with resins are used intimately and it is done in single pressure vessel. It is good to know that the water quality in mixed-bed comes better than the two-bed deionization. This particular water plant is more sensitive to detect the impurities and ultimately the water quality comes with high safety.
